Marian Column

  1. mistoMariánské náměstí

A very valuable Baroque monument. The original column from 1785 with its 1.45-metre-high statue of the Madonna was the work of Jan Schwarzel from Pottenberg. It stood in the centre of Mariánské náměstí until 1930, when it was moved to its current location – in front of the Culture House.

On Sunday 27th July 2014 Uherský Brod was hit by a severe storm, which snapped the linden tree near the Marian Column. As it snapped the trunk tore down the 4-metre-high sandstone column. The linden tree was in such a bad state that it was cut down.

A public collection was made to raise funds to build a new column, with people donating over 108 thousand CZK. The copy of the Marian Column was created by the sculptor Tomáš Martinák from Mařatice and was installed at the original site at the beginning of April 2015.
