Obelisk Via Lucis
- Masarykovo náměstí
This bronze obelisk was donated to Uherský Brod in 1992 by Ivan Theimer, a leading Czech sculptor of worldwide renown, who now lives in France and Italy. The obelisk was unveiled to mark the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Jan Amos Komenský, an event that was attended by the then president, Václav Havel.
The entire plinth and obelisk are literally covered in quotes, records, figurative miniatures and geographic elements. There is the whole of the Orbis Pictus and everything that pertains to Komenský.
The dominant feature is the large turtle supporting the column, as a symbol of eternity. It expresses wisdom, perseverance and humility. You might also notice two boys, who are launching paper boats out into the world, thus spreading awareness of Komenský and more, all over the world.
